Myanmar last year relaxed visa requirements for visitors from China, Japan, South Korea and Macao, allowing these nationals to obtain visa-on-arrival at international airports across the country. The change resulted in a 35 percent increase in air travel into the country and a surge in the number tourists entering on visa-on-arrival to 532,327.
Chinese nationals entering Myanmar on visa-on-arrival numbered 452,319, a 152 percent increase over the previous year. However, the coronavirus outbreak, occurring during the Chinese Lunar New Year travel season, has put a damper on this growth.
As a newly opened country with tourism as one of its growth drivers, Myanmar is making efforts to attract more tourists.
The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population are collaborating to facilitate tourist visits.
Most visitors to Myanmar are from Asian countries, with the largest numbers coming from Thailand, Japan and South Korea.
