As foreign investment in Myanmar continues to soar, DFDL Legal and Tax, the country’s longest established foreign legal tax firm celebrates its 20th anniversary in ASEAN. Having established its first office in Vientiane, Lao PDR in 1994, DFDL Legal & Tax has since expanded to 12 offices in eight countries with more than 130 local and foreign legal professionals and over 300 staff.

“The celebration of our strong history in legal and tax services in frontier markets in Southeast Asia comes at a time of new opportunity for foreign investors in Myanmar,” said William D Greenlee Jr, managing partner of DFDL’s Myanmar operation.

“While our 20 year anniversary is a landmark occasion to look back at our past achievements, it is also about looking forward to the expanding possibilities in Myanmar.”

DFDL Myanmar was founded in 2005 as the first foreign legal and tax firm in country. It has rapidly grown to one of the country’s largest firms, with more than 25 experienced local lawyers and foreign legal advisers providing efficient, effective and practical legal services at an international standard, coupled with a high level of personal in-depth knowledge of the local environment.

“The legal environment in Myanmar continues to rapidly change; we’ve seen foreign bank licenses granted and recent expansion in the scope of foreign investment here,”said Greenlee.

“DFDL is unique in that it has been present throughout this period of unprecedented reform and opening up. Our critical knowledge of the country’s past, combined with our focus on the future and ongoing legal and tax reforms are why we continue to standout in the market.”

Chambers Global, one of the world’s most prestigious awards recognising achievements of global law firms, this year ranked DFDL, which has a presence in eight Southeast Asian countries, among the leading General Business Law Firms (Band 1) in Myanmar, and named a number of its advisers as leading individuals.

While the firm was founded in Yangon, the opening of the Naypyitaw office in July 2013 was another milestone as DFDL Myanmar became the first legal and tax firm to establish a presence in the new capital.

DFDL is notable for its long history of involvement in the oil and gas, power, infrastructure, telecom, banking, and real estate sectors and is at the frontier of developing and advising on projects that break new legal ground in Myanmar. The firm was recently awarded the 2014 Asian-Mena Counsel for Deal of the Year for assisting the first food industry joint-venture in Myanmar between Heineken and Asia-Pacific Brewery.

Nichole Danette Cross is Business Development Manager at DFDL.
