Cummins Power Generation to Provide Hybrid Power Solution in Myanmar

US-based Cummins Power Generation has secured a contract to supply hybrid power solutions to Irrawaddy Green Towers (IGT) in Myanmar, the firm said.

Under this contract, Cummins will supply solar hybrid, battery hybrid and diesel generator solutions to over 750 cell-tower sites that IGT will roll out in Myanmar during the next twelve months.

“While there are no shortages of renewable hybrid solution providers, we chose Cummins Power Generation for their technical expertise as well as their local service capability and coverage,” said Charbel Abou-Jaoude, CEO of IGT, during the contract signing in Yangon.

“Additionally, we were looking for a partner who is as committed to the growth of this country as we are,” he added.

Irrawaddy Green Towers has been selected by Telenor Myanmar to build and operate telecom towers for their large scale, countrywide mobile network.

In June 2013, Telenor and Ooredoo won a licence to launch a mobile network in Myanmar. Cummins is already one of the leading suppliers to Ooredoo and with this new supply contract with Irrawaddy Green Towers, two of the nation’s largest mobile service providers’ networks will be powered by Cummins.

Cummins said its advanced hybrid power systems are engineered to optimise capital expenditure while lowering total cost of ownership and ensuring uninterrupted operations.

“Leveraging our proven experience in hybrid power, we designed a hybrid product specifically for the telecom industry to provide the best value to our customers,” said Alan Zhao, director of telecom business at Cummins.

Myanmar remains one of the last greenfield opportunities in telecommunications industry and Cummins said it has established a strong service and support network to meet the unique challenges of the country.

“Cummins Power Generation appreciates that our customers like Irrawaddy Green Towers and Ooredoo recognise our ability to innovate and deliver unique products and strong service to meet their needs,” said Antonio Leitao, vice president, Cummins Power Generation.

“Cummins Power Generation is committed to continue to invest in products and services that are designed to serve our customers even better.”
