Eel Export Surpasses Predicted Figures

The export of Eel has surpassed predicted figures for the first six months of the financial year, according to figures from the Myanmar Fishery Federation.
The target for the first half of the 2013-2014 fiscal was $30 million, with the import figure reaching $32 million up to the end of September. For the remaining six months, the target is $40 million in Eel export, but according to current estimates, that figure could reach $60 million.
“Eel export among fishery products have a lot of potential now and in the future,” said U Ba Thaw, chairman of Myanmar Eel Entrepreneurs Association. “We believe that eel export will overstep the specified estimate at the end of the fiscal year,” he added.
Myanmar’s Eel is particularly popular in China and Japan, with China having been sent 10,000 tonnes in total. Myanmar’s largest fishery products for export are Eel and Rohu, with $260 million being earned from the products in the current fiscal.
