Five Airports to be Privatised: DCA

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) said it is planning to allow privatisation of airports as part of the government’s plan to empower the private sector.

Five local airports will be transferred to private businesses as a first step, U Kyaw Soe, a director of DCA, told Myanmar Business Today.

“Businesspeople are eyeing Bagan Nyaung Oo Airport which receives many foreigners. Only five airports will be included in the preliminary process,” he said.

Among some 30 operational domestic airports, Bagan Nyaung Oo Airport, Heho Airport, Kyauk Phyu Airport, Thandwe Airport and Tachileik Airport will be allowed to be run by private companies.

DCA will accept and scrutinise the proposals of the interested companies and the private operations of airports are expected to be approved by the end of this year.

As the number of foreign entries picks up year-on-year, local carriers are reacting to the boom with expanding their itineraries, reinforcing their fleets as well as constructing aircraft repair factories which is expected to contribute to the development of the aviation sector.
