ICT City Project Plan Goes to Yangon Parliament

Data collected for establishing an “ICT City” (information and communications technology) in Yangon has been submitted to the regional government following the approval of the President earlier this year, according to Myanmar Computer Federation.

The project, which is aimed at housing ICT and related businesses, retail space, training centres and research facilities, is slated to be implemented on 300 acres of land in the first phase, to be followed by a 200-acre second phase.

However, the location of the project cannot be disclosed, U Khun Tun Oo, chairperson of the association said.

“After the construction is completed, we will work towards installing technological and research-related equipment. The project’s cost has not yet been determined,” he said.

U Khin Tun Oo said a research centre is included in the project that will be built with foreign assistance, while technology training centres will also be included.

He said the project will try to attract global technological giants such as Google and Microsoft to invest in the prospective ICT city.

“If the project can be effectively implemented and becomes fully operational, young people will be able to access numerous job opportunities as well as global education options.”
