Tokyo-based Japan Greentea Co is showing interest in buying fresh tea leaves from Myanmar, said U Myo Win Aung, secretary of Myanmar Tea Leaf Association.
The company, which imports tea leaves, medicinal herbs and oils, has made enquiries at the Myanmar Embassy in Japan to buy fresh tea leaves from Myanmar.
Fresh tea leaves are those harvested directly from the tea plant, typically for use in soups or salads, as opposed to dried tea leaves, the type commonly used to brew the hot drink.
The company has expressed its intention to implement a long-term trade if the price is acceptable and a stable supply is guaranteed.
Officials for Greentea have said they are inclined to meet with potential exporters from the local tea industry.
“Our association is not exporting fresh tea leaves currently but we are trying to export both fresh and dried tea leaves. We have been observing the yield and other issues to be addressed for exports and also organising meetings to collect input,” U Myo Win Aung said.
There is a steady demand for fresh tea leaves in the domestic market and the association is planning projects to ensure exports.
The Ministry of Commerce has appointed business consuls in nine foreign countries to facilitate international trade with Myanmar.
