Local Firm Develops New Taxi Hailing App

A local software development company, Synapse, has developed a phone app that can help passengers find shared taxi rides.

The application, named Hoho Dede, meaning ‘here and there’ in Burmese, is currently only available for Android, and will allow passengers to find each other to hail taxis together.

“The passenger needs to turn on GPS and enter the destination. Then users can find passengers who will travel the same route. We did not use the application to connect with taxi-drivers,” U Thiha Tin Maung Aye, senior web developer of Synapse, told Myanmar Business Today.

The service can be used to plan a trip in advance, and there is a ladies-only option for women who do not wish to share rides with men.

“We plan to provide advanced version that can be used by voice,” U Thiha Tin Maung said.

The application can be used by logging in with a Facebook or Gmail account. GPS is needed for operation and the app can be operated with Android version 4.0.3 and above. 3G network is necessary for use, so it can only be used in Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw where there are 3G networks.
