The Myanmar Overseas Employment Agency Association has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Macau Overseas Employment Agency Association which will pave the way for 5,000 Myanmar workers to Macau per year.
The memorandum follows a similar agreement that was signed in September in Macau, which coincided with the establishment of the Macau Myanmar Human Resource Agencies Federation (MMHRAF).
“Macau is to take in about 5,000 Myanmar workers, mainly for the service industry and construction,” the head of the Macau Overseas Employment Agency Association, Kuong Kao, told the BBC.
He added that his agency seeks to recruit Myanmar workers as soon as possible.
Kao said the job opportunities were mainly related to hotel services. For basic workers there are three levels of salaries: cleaners and security guards are offered $500-700, mid-level staff, who speaks either Chinese or English, could earn $700-1,000, while graduates with computer knowledge and language skills are offered $1,000-1,500.
There are currently around 2,000 Myanmar working in Macau, most in the catering, service and construction industries, as well as domestic workers. Macau’s salary level is more competitive than other countries and cities in Asia, which serves as a pull factor for Myanmar workers.
