Matrade Sees Big Market Potential in Myanmar

The Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) said it sees Myanmar, along with countries in Africa and South America, as having big potential in terms of business products and services.

Export Development Senior Director Zulkepli Mohd Perai said exporters in Malaysia should take advantage of the potential in the countries, Malaysian news agency Bernama reported.

He said Myanmar is opening up its markets and there are certainly a lot of business and trade opportunities as such in that country.

However, Zulkepli said at this early stage, Matrade was being selective in respect of the products and services to be introduced to the markets of the areas concerned.

“While, Myanmar has much potential, we have to be cautious too, as the country is just building its system. We are thus being selective, and until the market structure is strengthened. Then, we can move into the market there more easily,” he was quoted as saying.

He said Matrade had been successful in organising a lot of programmes and activities in Myanmar, towards promoting products and branded services from Malaysia.

“This is because Myanmar has not been exposed to brands. So, by getting into the market there early with Malaysian brands, we can be a strong exporter, which is what we are focused on at present,” he said.

Zulkepli said the emergence of Malaysian banks in Myanmar will also give exporters and entrepreneurs from the country an advantage, with business and trade becoming easier.
