Ministry to Tap MICE Tourism Through New Website

In an attempt to grow tourism to Naypyitaw, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism will launch a promotional website, an official from the ministry told Myanmar Business Today.

The website, being developed by local IT firm Myanmars.net, will promote the attractions of Myanmar’s new capital, especially promoting the city as a centre for MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition) tourism.

Daw Khin Than Win, director of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, told Myanmar Business Today, “We are going to launch a standalone website to promote Naypyitaw as we have a sufficient infrastructure to welcome and host economic conferences and exhibitions.”

The website is not fully online, but can be found at travelnaypyitaw.org

Naypyitaw is primarily a city of government offices but it wants to improve its tourist standing, leading planners to bring in consultants from the Thai hotel and tourism industry. To build a roster of things to do in the spread-out capital, authorities have recently opened the parliament building to tour groups, albeit under heavy restrictions. KBZ airline is also planning a flight between Mandalay and Naypyitaw, although the two cities are only 272 kilometres apart.

A central office to organise tourism conferences, amateur golf championships, training and workshops will also be established this year.

U Htay Aung, minister for hotels and tourism, said at a MICE Tourism development meeting that tourism profile of Naypyitaw will be raised through the website.

According to official data, only 127,000 tourists visited Naypyitaw in 2014, but this number is expected to increase this year.
