Unsafe food worth K1.99 billion was seized by mobile teams in the last two and a half years since November 2012, according to the statistics of the Committee for the Control of Illegal Trade.
U Shwe Lett Maung, staff officer of the committee, said, “Most of the commodities are frozen meat, sausage, noodles and water bottles that are not certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We also found beer and liquor that were being illegally imported into the country. We have destroyed all the seized items.”
Dr Hla Hla Thein, vice chairman of Myanmar Livestock and Fisheries Federation, said, “About 10 truckloads of chicken are illegally imported and sold at the Yangon Chicken market everyday. The officials need to take effective actions to stop this trade.”
