Myanmar-Based Expatriate Launches New Book

Janice Merchant, a former Wall Street human resources senior executive and a Myanmar-based expatriate, has launched a new book “Expatriate in Myanmar, A Guide for Newcomers.”

Published by Myanmar Book Centre and now available for sale throughout Myanmar, this book contains over 200 pages of practical information for expatriates moving to Myanmar.

In addition, to chapters on how to find a new home, international schools choices, health care options, safety measures, leisure time activities, shopping, restaurants and entertainment in Yangon, there is a chapter each on Mandalay and Naypyitaw.

The book was launched at a ceremony on October 23 in Yangon.

Merchant has spent over 18 months researching information for this book. She also used her personal experience gained from her international assignments to compile this guide.

Merchant is a founding member and co-chair of the Yangon Newcomers Group. With over one hundred members from across the globe, this women’s group offers a supportive structure for Yangon newcomers. She is also the program coordinator for the International Friendship Group, another international organisation that raises funds to support local charities.

Coinciding with the launch of this book, a multi-lingual team of experienced expatriates will be launching a boutique service; Making the Most of Myanmar, offering orientation programs and services for newcomers.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to fund scholarship and educational initiatives for students in need.
