Myanmar has secured tax exemption for its corn exports to Thailand during February to August of this year. Thailand represents a new market for Myanmar’s corn after exports to China were halted by the coronavirus epidemic.
“Before, we exported corn to China. Thailand has corn demand and is in a position to buy all the corn we produce,” said U Khin Maung Lwin, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Commerce.
Although Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce and traders in both countries have pushed for a year-long tax exemption for corn imports from Myanmar, such an agreement has not been forthcoming due to opposition from Thailand’s corn growers.
Last year, Myanmar exported nearly 700,000 tons of corn to Thailand through the Myawaddy-Mesot border gate. The Ministry of Commerce estimates that up to one million tons of corn exports can be achieved if Thailand grants a tax exemption for a whole year. Thailand has offered to buy up to that amount from Myanmar, which also has a permit to export the commodity to the Philippines, Vietnam, and Laos.
The country exports over 1.5 million tons of corn, 1.3 million tons through border trade posts and the rest through maritime trade routes, earning over $270 million.
It grows nearly 1.9 million acres of corn, mostly in Shan State, Sagaing Region, Magway Region, Chin State, Karen State and Kayah State.

ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံသို့ တစ်နှစ်ပတ်လုံး အခွန်ကင်း လွတ်ခွင့်ဖြင့်ပြောင်းတင်ပို့နိုင်ရန် နားလည်မှု စာချွန်လွှာ (သြ့) ရေးထိုးနိုင်ရေး နှစ်ဖက် ကုန်သည်များနှင့် စီးပွားရေးနှင့် ကူးသန်း ရောင်းဝယ်ရေးဝန်ကြီးဌာနအနေဖြင့် စီစဉ် နေသော်လည်း ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံမှ ပြောင်းစိုက် တောင်သူများက ကန့်ကွက်မှုများရှိနေခြင်း ကြောင့် သြ့ ရေးထိုးနိုင်ခြင်းမရှိသေး ကြောင်း စီးပွားရေးနှင့် ကူးသန်းရောင်းဝယ် ရေးဝန်ကြီးဌာနမှ သိရသည်။
ပြီးခဲ့သည့် ဘဏ္ဍာနှစ်တွင် ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံသို့ု ပြောင်းတန်ချိန် ခုနှစ်သိန်းနီးပါးအထိ တင် ပို့နိုင်ခဲ့ပြီး တစ်နှစ်ပတ်လုံး အခွန်ကင်းလွတ် ခွင့်ဖြင့် တင်ပို့နိုင်ပါက တန်ချိန် ၁ သန်းအထိ တင်ပို့နိုင်မည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ဝန်ကြီးဌာနမှ အဆိုပါပုဂ္ဂိုလ်က ပြောသည်။
ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံက မြန်မာ့ပြောင်းတန်ချိန် ၁ သန်းအထိ ဝယ်ယူရန် ကမ်းလှမ်းထားပြီး မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှထွက်သမျှ ပြောင်းများကို ဝယ် ယူနိုင်သည့်အခြေအနေရှိသည်။ ယမန်နှစ် အတွင်း ဖိလစ်ပိုင်၊ ဗီယက်နမ်၊ လာအိုနိုင်ငံ များကို ပြောင်းတင်ပို့ခွင့်ရခဲ့ပြီး ပြောင်းသည် ဈေးကွက်အလားအလာရှိနေသော သီးနှံအ ဖြစ်ရှိနေသည်။
