NYK Establishes Logistics JV for Inland Auto Transport Service

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has established a joint venture firm for car transportation in Myanmar, Japan’s second largest shipping company said.

NYK, and its local partner, Phee Group and Silverbird Auto Logistics Ltd, have set up NYK Silverbird Auto Logistics Ltd (NSAL), a logistics company that will operate an inland transportation service in Myanmar for finished cars, NYK said in a statement.

This service will make use of car trailers for transport and include storage, services for pre-delivery inspection, repair, and supply of parts for finished cars, and customs clearance.

With Myanmar’s rapidly growing economy the demand for cars has also skyrocketed as the government loosened its tight grip on automobile imports.

NSAL will offer short-distance transportation to Yangon city from the port of Yangon, and medium- to long-distance transport to certain cities, such as Naypyitaw and Mandalay. NYK already has a car carrier service to Yangon.

NYK said using its know-how of finished-car services, together with Phee Group and Silverbird’s network in Myanmar, the company will push its medium-term management plan.

Phee Group operates shipping agencies and has companies involved in total logistics solutions and liner/box operations in Southeast Asia. Silverbird Auto Logistics Ltd is a logistics company owning and operating a car carrier for CBU transportation services in Myanmar.
