Opening Up New Opportunities for Sesame Farmers

Myanmar is one of the world’s top exporters of sesame, a crop grown by an estimated 500,000 farmers in the country’s Central Dry Zone. And yet sesame is known as the forgotten crop because of its tendency to be overshadowed by the more established paddy.

Sesame has the potential to generate even more export income for the country, but for that to happen, sesame farmers need help dealing with threats from climate change, labor shortages, pests and diseases.

Proximity Designs, a social business and one of Myanmar’s largest providers of agricultural products and services, has conducted extensive research into the sesame ecosystem and published the results in When It Rains, It Pours: Challenges and Opportunities in Myanmar’s Sesame Value Chain, now available online and in book forms.

“Even though sesame is the second largest staple crop in Myanmar, the thousands of farmers who grow this crop have been poorly served for many years,” said Jim Taylor, CEO and co-founder of Proximity Designs.

Through its research, Proximity has not only uncovered the challenges facing sesame farmers but also identified opportunity areas around farming, distribution and refinement of sesame, said Daw Phyu Hninn Nyein, Proximity’s General Manager of Farm Advisory Services.

“We hope other stakeholders join us in supporting the sesame ecosystem,” she said. “In Myanmar, we have a saying, ‘You cannot make oil with just one sesame seed.’ The more organizations that work to meaningfully meet the needs of sesame farmers, the more impact we can create together.
